All the Gear and No Idea

Anyone that is a runner knows, no matter what the distance, you need kit.

All the Gear and No Idea

Breaking through barriers.

You need kit that allows you to freely move, to perform, to feel safe and - for some race distances - to help preserve your life.

I’m an ultra runner and that means that many of the events I take part in have ‘mandatory kit lists’. A list of essential items that, if I do not show that I have them on me before and during an event, I am disqualified.

But this mandatory kit can be really bloody expensive.

I found that out during the first ultramarathon I did, the Marathon Des Sables am still finding it out. It seems that, the longer and more technical the race, the bigger the kit price tag.

Both kit and finance are just two of the barriers to access for we Black Trail Runners seek to address. So that’s why, during the next few months, I am gonna share my Spine Race prep journey with you. And kit is gonna be one of the main areas I will address.

I am gonna share the mandatory kit list, my tests of the kit (including the Bivvy Bag - more on what that is later!). I’ll share what worked, what didn’t and everything in between.

And maybe, just maybe, me sharing this stuff, learning from my mistakes and being truly transparent - as I ain’t sponsored by no-one - will enable more people believe that, with support, they can have a go too.

First blog/vlog comes next week - first recce takes place this coming Sunday!
